Things to Know Before Moving to Atlanta, Georgia
1. Want to fit in? Don’t call it “Hotlanta”!
Atlanta is definitely HOT(and humid), but nothing says out-of-towner than someone calling Atlanta Hotlanta. If you have to call it a nickname just stick with “the A” or even “the ATL.”
2. Coke is KING.
Period. Coca-Cola Co. is huge in Atlanta, well they are headquartered here… They even have a great museum-like place, that you should definitely check out, called The World of Coca-Cola. Their competitor, you know the one that starts with “P”, is kind of like Voldemort in Harry Potter… we don’t speak of that name.
3. What is OTP or ITP?
Metro Atlanta is made up more than 5.9 million people, that’s about 56% of the people living in Georgia. Now the City of Atlanta is considered I-T-P, which means in-the-perimeter, so you could probably guess what OTP means, right? Out-of-the-perimeter… You will commonly hear OTP/ITP lingo when discussing directions, where people live in Atlanta, etc. So what’s the perimeter? It’s a great wall surrounding the beautiful sky rises of Atlanta, kidding, it’s just our Interstate 285.
4. Atlanta has Festivals, to infinity and beyond!
Dogwood Festival, Decatur Arts Festival, Atlanta Jazz Festival, Fiesta Atlanta, Music Midtown, Sweetwater 420 Fest, Inman Park Festival– the list could go on and on, I promise! There’s always something to do outdoors in Atlanta, well maybe not during a Pandemic, but it shall pass and the festivals will commence.
5. Tea. It’s sweet!
If you want unsweet tea, ask for “unsweet tea” because here in Georgia the tea is SWEET!
6. .1 inch of Snow or Ice?
Schools closed. Wrecks everywhere. No Bread, Batteries or Milk.
7. We do get yearly blizzards, they’re just yellow.
Pollen… EVERYWHERE! Just in March of 2020 we hit 2nd highest pollen count since they started recording, back in 1991. During the bad days they’ll be pollen storms and only yellow cars on the road.
8. Metro Atlanta is HUGE! The traffic… is even “HUGE-er”!!!
Like… 20 counties big. Big cities have one thing in common, could you guess? TRAFFIC! When talking to my clients that purchase in Metro Atlanta, my first question is “Do you physically work at an office?” Then they usually say yes, so I ask them how long of a commute are they going to be ok with. We go from there on what options they have or if we need may need to switch up game plans. You won’t run from Atlanta traffic, you will sit in your car in it. I like to keep audiobooks or TEDx talks handy for the car time!
